EmilyAnn Duffley

I work at the intersection of music and helping people to hear.

My Story

I am a singer and audiologist who loves to create music and help people hear better. I’ve always been pulled by both art and science and am finding ways to integrate the two disciplines into my life.

My Education

Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance, University of Illinois, Class of 2019

Bachelors of Science in Speech and Hearing Science, University of Illinois, Class of 2019

Doctor of Audiology, Northwestern University, Class of 2022

I love to sing

I was that kid who listened to Julie Andrews and Maria Callas while doing homework. At age 13, I made my mainstage debut in Amahl and The Night Visitors with Chamber Opera Chicago. I was hooked.

I am a crossover singer who loves to jump between classical and popular musical styles. I love using my full soprano sound when singing works by Mozart, Donizetti or Faure. I enjoy covering songs by popular artists such as Elton John, Adele, and Sarah Bareilles. And I love blending pop and classical technique to sing musical theater works including Rogers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, and Stephen Schwartz.

One of my favorite places to sing is in a church setting. I particularly love to lead people in prayer through song and love how masses are integrated into so many monumental moments in people’s lives, such as weddings, communions, baptisms, confirmations, and funerals. Currently, I enjoy singing regularly at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in the Woodlands, TX. I am also excited to be singing sacred music with the Houston Symphony this season.

I love to help people hear

I love helping people hear speech and music through my practice as a pediatric audiologist at Texas Children’s Hospital. In my role, I test hearing, diagnose hearing loss, and help families find an appropriate language modality for their child. I also program hearing technology such as hearing aids, BAHAs, and cochlear implants. I especially love helping young musicians program their hearing devices optimally for their instruments, working with children who have different abilities, and optimizing hearing in classroom scenarios.

I love to teach music with science in mind

One of my greatest joys is sharing my passion for music with others through teaching voice lessons. I love helping students find a healthy singing technique so that they can enjoy using their instrument for years to come. Thanks to my degree in speech and hearing science, I offer an in depth understanding of human anatomy to my students and help them to understand how their voice instrument works and how to use it.

My background in audiology also helps me be a better music teacher. I have strong technical skills in sound production. I have helped many of my students create recordings and audition tapes. Lastly, through my experiences in audiology, I have also found a love for working with people with different abilities. If your child has any special needs or unique learning styles, I am interested in learning how to help support them in their musical journey through an individualized learning plan.
